Ordering window screens for a commercial building is not simply a matter of selecting a standard width and height. The screen must fit the actual opening, work with the chosen mounting system and be identified correctly when delivered to site.
For offices, hotels, apartment buildings and other multi-window projects, a reliable size schedule is as important as the screen dimensions themselves. It connects site measurements to approved fabrication drawings, quantities and installation locations.
Are commercial window screen sizes standardized? There is no single universal finished size for commercial insect screens. Buildings may use repeated window modules, but the screen dimensions depend on the actual mounting opening and selected screen design. Use an approved fabrication drawing and project size schedule as the production reference.
Standard Window Sizes vs Finished Screen Sizes
A building drawing may show several identical window modules. That does not necessarily mean the screens can all be manufactured to the same dimensions.
The first step is to separate the dimensions used by the architect, site surveyor and screen manufacturer.
| Dimension | What It Describes | Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal window size | The window module or reference size shown on architectural drawings | Design coordination and initial quantity planning |
| Measured opening size | The actual dimensions at the intended screen mounting position | Checking site conditions and available installation space |
| Finished screen size | The specified overall dimensions of the manufactured screen assembly | Fabrication, dimensional inspection and labeling |
A supplier's published size range is a product limitation, not a universal building standard. Larger openings may require a different frame section, reinforcement or screen configuration.
How to Measure a Commercial Window Opening
Measure at the intended screen mounting position. The visible glass dimension or nominal window size may not represent the space available for a screen frame.
Record three widths, three heights and both diagonals. Keep the individual measurements rather than reducing them immediately to one width and one height.
Record More Than Width and Height
- Mounting depth: Measure the space available for the screen frame, retainers and removal movement.
- Frame obstructions: Check handles, hinges, drainage paths, restrictors and nearby architectural details.
- Fixing surface: Identify the material and usable area where the screen will be attached.
- Opening condition: Note tapered sides, bowed members, damaged surfaces or local irregularities.
Diagonal measurements help reveal differences in opening geometry, but matching diagonals alone do not prove that every edge is straight or every corner is square. Review the full set of measurements before selecting a finished size.
Converting Opening Measurements to Finished Screen Size
The smallest measured width and height identify limiting dimensions within the surveyed opening. They are not automatically the manufacturing size.
The conversion depends on how the screen is retained.
| Mounting Type | Sizing Approach | Main Check |
|---|---|---|
| Inside or recess mount | Fit the screen assembly within the defined recess. | Fitting clearance, frame depth and removal access |
| Face mount | Extend the screen frame beyond the clear opening by the approved overlap. | Flat mounting surface, fixing positions and nearby obstructions |
| Clip-retained frame | Size the screen to suit the selected clip and frame engagement geometry. | Retention, insertion path and sash clearance |
| Integrated window system | Coordinate the screen with the window system's section drawing. | Profile compatibility, window operation and drainage |
A fixed deduction from every opening is not suitable for all mounting types. A recess installation may need fitting clearance, while a face-mounted design may require additional frame overlap.
The approved screen drawing should identify the exact dimensional reference: overall frame width and height, fixing position, mounting face and relevant hardware.
Worked Example: An Opening with Unequal Measurements
Suppose a site survey records the following dimensions for one window opening:
| Position | Measured Width | Measured Height |
|---|---|---|
| Position 1 | 1,204 mm (top) | 1,505 mm (left) |
| Position 2 | 1,202 mm (middle) | 1,503 mm (center) |
| Position 3 | 1,200 mm (bottom) | 1,501 mm (right) |
The minimum recorded width is 1,200 mm and the minimum height is 1,501 mm. These readings describe the opening constraints, not the final screen dimensions.
The installer must also review the diagonal measurements, frame shape and mounting position. Once the selected screen system and its fitting arrangement are confirmed, the finished width and height can be entered on the fabrication drawing.
About this example: The measurements are hypothetical. They illustrate the difference between field dimensions and approved production dimensions; they are not standard commercial window sizes.
Building a Commercial Window Screen Size Schedule
A commercial order needs a way to connect each screen to its intended location. This becomes especially important when a project contains several similar-looking window types.
Assign each opening a unique ID and group screens by approved finished size only after site measurements and mounting details have been reviewed.
Example Project Schedule
| Screen ID | Location | Opening Size | Mounting | Qty. | Drawing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| WS-A01 | Office / Type A | 1,200 x 1,500 mm | Recess | 24 | Pending approval |
| WS-B02 | Meeting room / Type B | 900 x 1,200 mm | Face | 12 | Pending approval |
| WS-C03 | Service area / Type C | 750 x 1,000 mm | Clip-retained | 8 | Pending approval |
The dimensions and quantities above are illustrative. In a production schedule, opening size and finished screen size should occupy separate fields.
The final schedule should also identify the screen model, frame finish, mesh type, hardware, drawing revision and installation location.
Preventing Size and Location Mix-Ups
A screen can be manufactured correctly and still cause an installation delay if it is labeled for the wrong room or an outdated drawing revision.
- Match each opening to a screen ID. Use the same ID in the site survey, fabrication drawing and order schedule.
- Separate measured and finished dimensions. Record both values so that a site measurement cannot be mistaken for a fabrication instruction.
- Control drawing revisions. Identify the approved revision and document any later changes before production continues.
- Carry the ID through packing. Put the screen ID and relevant destination information on product or carton labels.
This traceability is useful when screens are installed floor by floor or delivered in separate project phases.
Pre-Production Approval and Dimensional Inspection
Before manufacturing a commercial screen order, the buyer and supplier should agree on the drawing and inspection criteria for the selected screen design.
The approval record should cover:
- Dimension reference: Which edges or frame features define finished width and height.
- Permitted variation: The agreed finished-size tolerance and any squareness or fit-critical requirements.
- Maximum product size: Whether the selected construction is suitable for the largest screens in the schedule.
- Fit check: A sample or agreed verification procedure for mounting, removal and window operation.
- Inspection record: The method used to link inspected units to the approved drawing revision.
A tolerance for an individual aluminum extrusion is not automatically the tolerance of the assembled screen. Frame cutting, corner assembly and overall geometry must be evaluated at the finished-product level.
For manufacturing-specific dimensional issues, see Aluminum Screen Profile Tolerance .
Installation and safety: An insect screen should not be treated as a fall-prevention barrier or safety guard. Where a project requires protective glazing, guarding or other safety measures, those requirements must be addressed separately.
Information to Send with a Bulk Screen Enquiry
A commercial screen quotation can be reviewed more efficiently when the enquiry includes the project size schedule, window drawings and mounting details.
State the required screen configuration, mesh and frame finish, quantities by screen ID, destination market and delivery requirements. Include any approved dimensional tolerances or sample requirements.
For projects with multiple screen types, indicate whether the order should be packed by building, floor, room or installation phase.

Frequently Asked Questions
Sometimes, but only after the openings and mounting conditions have been checked. Windows with the same nominal module may have different site dimensions or obstructions. Group them by approved finished screen size, not appearance alone.
Should a screen be manufactured to the smallest measured opening size? Not automatically. The smallest readings help identify the available space, but the finished screen size depends on the mounting system, fitting allowance and approved dimensional reference. Use the fabrication drawing as the production instruction.
